Exhaustion has arrived

I started working at Wyllie Fox Farm on Wednesday. I left a little early in case I missed a road or something. It ended up being a good thing that I did! I missed Shortcut Rd and went the long way around and then the map Andrew had drawn for me didn't have the road I wanted before the road the farm was on. So I went way down the wrong road before I decided to turn around. But I still made it there by 7. Jamie (my boss) took me out to cut some lettuce and some other leavy green stuff. Then I went out with a couple other girls and snipped a bunch of baby mixed green type stuff. Then Jen and I planted a bunch of different kinds of seeds. We took a half hour lunch and then had to weed some other lettuce. I was really sick of lettuce by the end of the day.

Yesterday when I got there, Jamie was going to teach me how to pick a bunch of different things. We started walking out to the field(s) and then he said he had forgotten he need 3.5 pounds of that baby mix lettuce stuff picked before anything else. So I started on that and Jen came to help when she got there. Then we worked with a lady named Bonnie transplanting a bunch of little Kale and tons of Swiss Chard. That took us to lunch time then Jen and I went out to weed squash.

The work isn't really hard but it's enough to make my muscles (or lack there of) sore... mostly my back/shoulders and the back of my thighs.

All day on Thursday I was really eager to get home because Ivy was due (apparently she's had them on the day she's due around 6am) and she hadn't had them by the time I had to leave for work. I got home and nothing had happened yet. We kept checking on her all evening and into the night. I went out around 10:30 and came back in around 11 and read for a little bit before going to bed between 11:30 and 12. A little before 1:50 this morning, Kim yelled down the stairs to me that they were hearing Ivy blatting over the baby monitor they had hooked up. Kim was first to the barn and there was already a baby boy on the ground. When I got to the barn, Andrew had just gotten into the stall with Ivy and Kim was cleaning off the baby. We waited around for the next one and it was taking longer then normal. They realized that there were 2 trying to come out at the same time. So Kim put on one of those really long plastic gloves and helped out a bit. Before too long there was a baby girl born. I heard "Victoria, can you grab a towel and come get this one". I was still trying to get her dry and they were asking me to get another towel for boy number 2 who was born at 2:28. It was interesting trying to clean them off because the first boy was already up and walking around. He kept coming over and sucking on my pant legs (I had huge wet marks on them by the time we were done in there).

Andrew milked Ivy and we came in the house to pasteurize. While we were waiting for it Andrew and Kim took showers and got the rest of their stuff packed up and into the car. We fed babies, came back in the house, and then they left for a weekend of camping. Andrew said that them leaving me with babies that were 2-3 hours old just went to show that they trusted me. (eeek!)

The babies are adorable! The first boy has super long legs and a short, very fuzzy body. He's black on the back half and kinda a light gray in the front with a little black here and there. He's got a lot of black on his face and he has white strikes that start a bit above his eyes and go straight down and ends below his eyes. Kinda though he looked like a little devil because they look like little horns. Then he reminded me of Scar from the Lion King (his white marks looks like the lion's scar).
The girl has better proportions and really cool markings! She's got black on her back part, in the middle she has a white band, and the front of her is kinda the same gray as the first boy. She's so cute!!!
The second boy is also better proportioned then the first boy. He has black and brownish/red on the back part and white on the front. His leg markings are super cool!!! I don't know how to describe them... they are kinda lined and dotted... I'll have to try to get some pictures to post.
Ike seems to "like" them. This morning when I went into the barn he was laying on the hay bales (which makes up the baby's stall right now) just watching them. But he does try to bat at them sometimes. This afternoon when I went in to feed them Ike was sitting with his back towards the babies swishing his tail and they were trying to eat it. And tonight when I went into the barn to do chores, Ike was completely sprawled all out over one of the bales sleeping and all the babies were in the corner sleeping. It was super cute so I ran back inside and grabbed my camera :) I'll post pictures tomorrow.

I'm ready for bed but have a while to wait yet for the stuff to be pasteurized. Then I'll be up at 4:30 to feed, back to bed, up at 7 for chores, hopefully have time to take care of everything and shower before feeding them again at 10:30... then I'll have a few more hours to sleep :D YAY!
