Darb*

Oh, the characters that come in to work...

There's a guy that comes in at work EVERY weekend without fail. His name is Darb* and he's probably in his 30's. He likes to come for open mic and either play piano or guitar (today was it was his keyboard). He likes to talk... a LOT... to me.

At first I just thought maybe he lived alone and was lonely and just wanted to chat with anyone. I was cordial to him and he started talking more and more to me. He started getting a bit creepy when I started noticing he would find ANY excuse to come up to the counter, or sugar corner, or anywhere else for that matter just so he could talk to me. It started getting especially creepy when he tried two different ways to get me to sit with him while I was working. It got so bad Steve asked me if I knew Darb from before. I said No and asked why. Steve just kinda smirked and said "Well, he just seems to talk to you quite a bit."

Not only does he like to talk to me, he's now decided that I should be the one to serve him coffee if I'm in the front and he's mentioned that he was hoping I'd made his food and asked what he should get to eat. He's told me that I always put a smile on his face and that's worth coming in for.

A week or so ago it was closing time and I was out in the front washing the windows/doors. One door goes off of the entrance room and is back out of the way. I was on the opposite side of the door to the entryway and couldn't be seen from the front of the cafe. Darb was getting ready to leave and I was thinking maybe I'd get away with him not coming over to chat before leaving. But I must've been outta luck... he started heading out, saw me, and came right on over.

Earlier this week he came in and was kinda hanging around and I was bagging coffees or doing dishes or something and there were at least two other people out there working besides me that I could help him. So, I think it was Darryl, asked him if he needed anything and he said "Well, I was going to have someone get me some coffee but I guess she's too busy."

Steve's started teasing me more about Darb. Telling me I should go tell him he sounded good after playing the piano or that I should go talk to him. Last night Steve was in the back and I was in the corner filling the dishwasher when he came right behind the corner to tell me he was leaving and to have a good night. Then Steve came out once Darb was about to walk out the door and was like Aren't you going to go tell him goodbye? I told Steve he's already COME AROUND THE COUNTER to tell me goodbye and I thought that was enough!

Oh the characters that come into work.

P.S. If you've ever seen A Christmas Story, Steve says that Darb reminds him of the little boy that says "I like the Wizard of Oz" while they are waiting in line for Santa. (If you haven't see it you can watch it by clicking here -> youtube and jump to 8 minutes and 18 seconds.)
